Douglas R. Smith, PH.D., J.D. is a registered Patent Attorney and an Associate in the Firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group. His practice involves the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications, patentability searches and opinions, patent infringement and validity analyses, and trademark searches and opinions. Dr. Smith's practice further involves representing clients in patent infringement litigation actions and also in opposition proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining the Firm, Dr. Smith was an Associate at Kloss, Stenger & LoTempio in its Buffalo office, where he concentrated his practice in patent and trademark law, as well as toxic tort, products liability and patent infringement litigation. Dr. Smith's technical background includes all areas of chemistry, as well as, biotechnology and the mechanical arts. He is an author of numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles, and has given several national and international scientific presentations. Dr. Smith received a B.A. in English from SUNY Geneseo, a B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Brockport and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University at Buffalo before completing his J.D. degree at the University at Buffalo School of Law.
