Katherine H. McGuire is a Partner in the firm and Chair of the Intellectual Property practice group. She has more than 27 years of experience as a registered patent attorney and is a Partner in the firm's Business & Finance Department where she is Chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group. She has extensive experience in all aspects of U.S. and foreign patent procurement, infringement and validity analysis, freedom-to-operate opinions, competitive surveillance and patent litigation. Her practice further includes negotiating and preparing Intellectual Property agreements including patent and know-how licensing, joint development, technical service, confidentiality and consulting agreements, for example.

Ms. McGuire is a regular speaker on various intellectual property topics including being a regular presenter to the High-Tech Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership class which is offered to new and seasoned entrepreneurs and business leaders through the University at Buffalo School of Management.

Unlike many patent attorneys that have spent their entire careers in a law firm environment, Ms. McGuire spent more than 10 years of her career as in-house patent counsel for the global Fortune 500 company, Bausch & Lomb Incorporated. This extensive in-house experience provided Ms. McGuire with an understanding of how to develop a well-defined global patent strategy which is supported by responsible forecasting and budget setting for the intellectual property needs of a growing company. While at B&L, besides participating in IP strategy and budget setting, Ms. McGuire's work included performing ongoing competitive surveillance and identifying (via regular on-site IP audits at the R&D plants in Rochester NY, Ireland and Scotland) and protecting the intellectual property of the contact lens and cataract surgical business units, among others.
