3-27-20 Client Alert - COVID-19: IRS FAQs and Suspension of Certain Compliance Programs
The IRS recently announced special Federal income tax return filing and payment relief in response to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emergency. The IRS also released answers to frequently asked questions to provide helpful guidance with respect to this relief. For example, although the April 15th deadline will be automatically extended, taxpayers who have already scheduled payment to apply for April 15th must reschedule payment. The IRS has also announced its new People First Initiative to provide relief from April 1 to July 15, 2020, on issues ranging from easing payment guidelines for Installment Agreements and Offers in Compromise to collection and limiting certain enforcement actions. In a March 23, 2020 press conference, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo indicated that New York would be following the Federal income tax extension. However, the New York Department of Taxation and Finance has taken no official action yet.
