CannaBusiness: Walk The Line: An Employer’s Guide to Reasonable Suspicion Testing

According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, more than 70% of those abusing illicit drugs in the U.S. are employed. In addition, the most commonly abused drugs in the workplace are marijuana and cocaine, which can lead to absenteeism, increased healthcare/workers’ compensation costs, lost productivity, and more.

As such, it is critical that companies be proactive in legally addressing alcohol and drug use in the workplace. One of the ways that this is done is through reasonable suspicion processes.

Join us as Lorisa LaRocca, Partner at Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP, discusses:

  • The reasonable suspicion process (i.e. observe, confirm, document, confront, test)
  • Examples of how to approach employees in various scenarios
  • How HR and managers can recognize the physical, behavioral, speech and performance cues of substance abuse
