On a website called "Healthy American," people who claim to be consultants offer step-by-step plans on how a worker can get a medical exemption if their company requires one.

For $175, the top plan provides sample forms, access to court cases, and a letter signed by a pastor.

Some churches are mass-producing letters for their members to provide to employers so they can get out of a COVID vaccine requirement.

"We've actually seen some of these letters. They're cookie-cutter," said workplace attorney Lorisa LaRocca of Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP in Rochester. "That's where a lot of our clients are concerned, saying, 'I don't know if it's a sincerely-held religious belief. It's exactly the same as this other person says is their religious belief.'"

No major religion opposes COVID vaccination. In fact, Pope Francis and many other leaders endorse it. So how does an employer qualify whether to give someone an exemption for a "personal" belieL
